Dealing with damp is one of the most common challenges for homeowners in Bristol, especially in our beautiful Victorian and Georgian terrace properties. Left unchecked, rising and penetrating damp can ruin your décor, damage brickwork, and impact your health.
At Plasterers Bristol, we don’t just mask the issue—we provide long-term damp proofing and specialist replastering solutions that protect your home for years to come.
Take a look behind the scenes at one of our recent projects in Bristol, where we transformed a damp, compromised living space into a dry, beautifully finished room ready for decorating.
The Challenge: Rising Damp & Damaged Internal Walls
Our client contacted us after noticing classic signs of damp around the lower half of their living room walls and near the fireplace chimney breast. Salt contamination and moisture had caused the original plaster to bubble, crumble, and fail.
To fix it properly, the old, contaminated plaster had to be hacked off entirely back to the bare brickwork, exposing the root of the problem.

Our Multi-Stage Damp Proofing & Plastering Process
Achieving a high-quality finish on a damp-treated wall requires a strict, professional process. Shortcuts here mean the damp will simply return. Here is how our Bristol plastering team executed the job:
1. Preparation and Brickwork Stripping
We stripped the failing plaster up to a height of 1–1.5 meters (well above the moisture line) to ensure all salt-affected areas were removed. The brickwork was thoroughly cleaned down and treated to prevent future salt migration.
2. Applying the Specialist Damp-Proof Render Coat
Once the bare brick was prepped, we applied a specialist, high-density sand and cement backing render mixed with a water-resisting proofer. This creates an impenetrable barrier that stops moisture from pushing through to your interior walls.
3. Precision Floating and Levelling
The backing coat was carefully ruled and floated to ensure perfectly flat, straight lines, particularly around tricky areas like the chimney breast, alcoves, and large bay windows.
4. The Final Multi-Coat Plaster Finish
After letting the backing coats cure, we applied a flawless multi-coat skim finish. As you can see below, the plaster dries to a uniform, smooth pink finish—the hallmark of professional craftsmanship.
